“It is time to Restore Integrity and Pursue Excellence at MSU”

Detroit, Michigan.  Today, Detroit-based business and community leader Matthew Clayson will formally announce his candidacy for Michigan State University Trustee.

His professional experience includes various legal, management and leadership roles to grow successful, Michigan-based start-ups HelloWorld (formerly, ePrize), Shinola and 1-800-CARSHOW.  Additionally, he launched and led a joint venture between Business Leaders for Michigan and the College for Creative Studies to grow the innovation economy in Detroit and Southeast Michigan, where he raised $5,000,000 to develop programming that contributed to the creation of 2,300 new jobs.

“It is time we have a real conversation about what active, committed and courageous board leadership looks like at Michigan State University”

His corporate and civic accomplishments have been recognized by the German Marshall Fund, where he was a Marshall Memorial Fellow; the Aspen Institute, where he led delegations to coordinate business planning workshops with entrepreneurs in North Africa and the Middle East; the Atlantic Council, where he was selected to be a member of the Transatlantic Core Group; the BMW Foundation, where he is a member of its Responsible Leaders Network, and the Bosch Foundation, where he is a member of the Bosch Alumni Network.

Matt is running on a platform that includes prioritizing survivors’ rights, campus safety, college affordability and university accountability.  Matt decided to run after 3 months of conversations where he listened to concerns from more than 100 labor, business, civic, community and campus leaders.

“It is time we have a real conversation about what active, committed and courageous board leadership looks like at Michigan State University,” says Clayson.  “I look forward to leading that conversation, and to advancing a set of clear priorities intended to restore integrity and pursue excellence at Michigan State University.”

Matt is not new to board policies at MSU; he served as a student liaison to the MSU Board of Trustees in 2001 and 2002 where he:

  • Lobbied to protect the MSU Tuition Guarantee,
  • Preserved the $4000/student Michigan Merit Award,
  • Updated the MSU Anti-Discrimination Policy to extend protections to transgendered individuals,
  • Realized university-wide permanent recognition of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, and
  • Advocated to protect funding for the Visual Impairment Program in the MSU College of Education.

Following today’s launch, Matt will join colleagues at the Democratic Endorsement Convention in Detroit to share more information about his vision and qualifications.  The Democratic Party will nominate its candidates for the MSU Board in late summer 2018.
